APPROACH: Video games creation
Games For Change: games with an impact, to inspire you to change the world around us.
Our approach
Video games creation: as in other sectors, impact is becoming a major area of development for the Video Games sector.
Gamabilis’ objective is to make our video games a lever for changing individual and communal behaviour. Gamabilis works with its partners to define the impact objectives (increasing understanding, raising awareness, mobilising players, etc.), the target audience and the game’s context.
Stemming from Games For Change trend,Gamabilis’ Impact Video Games are aimed at various sectors such as education, research, business and the public sector. More broadly, they are aimed at all organisations seeking to mobilise their communities, incorporate a CSR approach into their mission, or provide a link between these various private, public and state parties.
It is the most powerful interactive medium for mobilising communities with strong values, reaching 2 billion people worldwide and around 2 out of every 3 people in France.
Themes
Over the last eight years, Gamabilis has been tackling the major issues of our time – personal health, the environment and society – in some fifteen games.
Health
Prevention of health issues is the first theme addressed by Gamabilis, covering diet, sexual behaviour, addictions, sport, and more. Whatever the angle and the target audience, there is a suitable game mechanic. It’s a theme that lends itself particularly well to our Video Games with Impact approach because of its behavioural aspect.
Environment
The environment is, of course, the biggest social concern of the years ahead. Gamabilis is opening up this theme through agriculture and the agro-ecological transition, because it’s a central issue that affects food, the climate and biodiversity, and it’s a simple, practical and fun way of tackling the subject. Who hasn’t dreamt of having their own farm?
Society/living together
The societal transformations underway are difficult to grasp because of how many of them are happening all at once. It’s also difficult to see the magnitude of the impact today. Gamabilis is firmly convinced that organisations, and companies in particular, have a major role to play in the impetus for change in society as a whole: developing people’s soft skills over and above their hard skills, diversity and inclusion, and making jobs more attractive.
Our commitments
Social and Environmental Responsibility
Gamabilis considers impact central to its mission, its creative line and its R&D programme, which is presented in detail here. This is reflected in its CSR approach and ESUS (Social and Solidarity Economy Company) accreditation, as well as practical initiatives in the studio (policy of purchasing refurbished equipment, repairs, etc.). According to a study by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), 78% of the digital sector’s impact comes from hardware.
For the video games sector, it is important not to encourage the acceleration of hardware replacement. This is why Gamabilis is particularly keen to optimise its games, especially their graphics for mobile platforms.
Gamabilis plans to assess the studio’s overall impact in the future.
Diversity and Inclusion
Gamabilis wants to promote a vision of diversity at the studio and in its games. This is reflected in its world, the themes it tackles, as well as through its desire to make its games more accessible, particularly to people with disabilities.
Gamabilis is working on a software tool to make it easier to develop accessibility features in video games for those with a visual impairment and blindness. This tool is currently in the testing phase and will be deployed as a PlugIn on the Unity asset store.
