On April 4, the experts of Working Group III (WGIII) published the <\/span>third<\/b> and final <\/span>IPCC report\u00b9<\/b>. <\/span>After describing the physical understanding of climate change (WGI) and then addressing its impacts (WGII), the IPCC turned its attention to <\/span>solutions<\/b> for <\/span>mitigating climate change<\/b> and its effects. Agroecology could be one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Agriculture, between risk and opportunity<\/b><\/h2>\n

Between 2010 and 2019, the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) sector was responsible for <\/span>13% to 21% of global greenhouse gas<\/b> (GHG) <\/span>emissions<\/b> induced by human activities. At the same time, however, <\/span>ecosystems<\/b> have acted as veritable <\/span>carbon sinks<\/b>, absorbing around \u2153 of human CO\u2082 emissions. So, to<\/span> limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C<\/b>, the sector’s challenge is to <\/span>reduce its emissions<\/b> while <\/span>improving its carbon sequestration capacities<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternative farming methods<\/b><\/h2>\n

To achieve this, a number of measures can be envisaged. They may concern forestry, bioenergy or <\/span>agriculture<\/b>. <\/span> In particular, the IPCC has identified a number of <\/span>agricultural approaches<\/b> as <\/span>alternatives to<\/b> conventional systems. These include <\/span>agroecology<\/b>, conservation agriculture, integrated production systems and organic farming. According to the scientists, these approaches could make it possible to implement several mitigation measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Agroecology, a lever in the fight against climate change<\/b><\/h2>\n

The French Ministry of Agriculture defines agroecology as “<\/span>a way of designing production systems based on the functionalities offered by ecosystems<\/span><\/i>“\u00b2.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the IPCC, it can improve system resilience and generate numerous co-benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n
