{"id":3752,"date":"2021-06-21T16:28:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T14:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gamabilis.com\/?post_type=actualites&#038;p=3752"},"modified":"2025-01-23T14:46:59","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T12:46:59","slug":"agroecologie-et-changement-climatique","status":"publish","type":"actualites","link":"https:\/\/gamabilis.com\/en\/actualites\/agroecologie-et-changement-climatique\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change: agroecology, an essential lever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 4, the experts of Working Group III (WGIII) published the <\/span><b>third<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and final <\/span><b>IPCC report\u00b9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After describing the physical understanding of climate change (WGI) and then addressing its impacts (WGII), the IPCC turned its attention to <\/span><b>solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>mitigating climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its effects. Agroecology could be one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Agriculture, between risk and opportunity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2010 and 2019, the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) sector was responsible for <\/span><b>13% to 21% of global greenhouse gas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GHG) <\/span><b>emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> induced by human activities. At the same time, however, <\/span><b>ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have acted as veritable <\/span><b>carbon sinks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, absorbing around \u2153 of human CO\u2082 emissions. So, to<\/span><b> limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the sector&#8217;s challenge is to <\/span><b>reduce its emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while <\/span><b>improving its carbon sequestration capacities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Alternative farming methods<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve this, a number of measures can be envisaged. They may concern forestry, bioenergy or <\/span><b>agriculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In particular, the IPCC has identified a number of <\/span><b>agricultural approaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><b>alternatives to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conventional systems. These include <\/span><b>agroecology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conservation agriculture, integrated production systems and organic farming. According to the scientists, these approaches could make it possible to implement several mitigation measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Agroecology, a lever in the fight against climate change<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The French Ministry of Agriculture defines agroecology as &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a way of designing production systems based on the functionalities offered by ecosystems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;\u00b2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the IPCC, it can improve system resilience and generate numerous co-benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Agroecology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the potential to : <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reducing emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by limiting synthetic inputs and improving nitrogen use efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Carbon sequestration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanks to diversified crop rotations, the development of cover crops, the use of natural fertilizers and the inclusion of agroforestry. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Roots of Tomorrow to discover agroecology<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, there is still a great deal of research to be done on the link between agroecology and climate. But there is a strong consensus that <\/span><b>agriculture must evolve to help preserve the environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> This<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the ambition of our latest <\/span><b>serious game<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Produced under the scientific supervision of INRAE,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamabilis.com\/roots-of-tomorrow\/\"> <b><i>Roots of Tomorrow<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a strategy game on agroecology.
